The Corsairs

City of Umbar in Harad. The City of the Corsairs stood at the far end of the Havens of Umbar which opened onto the Sea south of the Bay of Belfalas. The city was home to a group of seafaring raiders known as the Corsairs. They were descended from the sons of Castamir and his followers who had rebelled against King Eldacar of Gondor during the Kin-strife. The rebels came to Umbar in 1448 of the Third Age. They mingled with the native inhabitants, who in turn were descendants of the Haradrim and the Black Numenoreans (Men of Numenor corrupted by Sauron). The Corsairs were enemies of the Men of Gondor and they frequently raided Gondor's coasts. In 1810, King Telumehtar of Gondor retaliated by capturing Umbar and destroying the Corsairs' stronghold. In the years that followed, Gondor was distracted by other concerns and the Corsairs were able to reclaim Umbar and rebuild their stronghold.
