Edoras (City of Rohan)

Main town in Rohan and site of the royal court. Edoras was located at the foot of the White Mountains, which formed the southern border of Rohan. The town stood on a green hill at the mouth of the valley of Harrowdale. There were many wooden houses on the slopes of the hill. At the summit on a green terrace was Meduseld, the great hall of the Kings of Rohan. There was a spring at the bottom of the terrace that issued from a stone horse's head. From it a stream flowed downhill and alongside a paved road and stone steps descended to the town gate. Edoras was surrounded by a great wall and thorny fence and a dike. The town was defended by the Muster of Edoras, comprised of Riders from the town itself and the surrounding King's Lands including Harrowdale, as well as nearby parts of the East-mark and West-mark. The Muster of Rohan was the ward of the First Marshal of the Mark. During Theoden's reign, the King himself acted in this capacity, and Elfhelm was the officer in command of the garrison of Edoras.

Fangorn Forest

Home of the Ents. Fangorn Forest was located at the southeastern end of the Misty Mountains near the Gap of Rohan. The mountains formed the western border of Fangorn. At the end of the mountain range stood the stronghold of Isengard near the southwestern corner of the forest. To the east and south of Fangorn was the land of Rohan. Lothlorien lay about 75 miles north of Fangorn. Fangorn Forest stretched approximately 100 miles from north to south and 100 miles from east to west, covering an area of about 10,000 square miles. Two rivers flowed from Fangorn Forest. In the northern part of the forest, the Limlight flowed from the woods and then formed the northern border of Rohan before emptying into the Anduin.

Helms Deep & The Hornburg

Stronghold in Rohan; site of the Battle of Helm's Deep - one of the key battles of the War of the Ring. Helm's Deep was located near the Gap of Rohan at the foot of the three-peaked mountain called the Thrihyrne in the northwestern fork of the White Mountains. Between the arms of the Thrihyrne lay a valley called the Deeping-coomb. A trench and rampart called Helm's Dike stretched across the Deeping-coomb. Two furlongs - or a quarter mile - behind Helm's Dike was Helm's Gate, the entrance to Helm's Deep. Helm's Deep was a narrow ravine with high cliffs on the northern and southern sides that blocked out the sunlight. The Deeping-wall was built across the entrance to the ravine, and at the northern end of the wall was the fortress of the Hornburg. No enemy had ever captured the Hornburg while it was defended. The Hornburg stood on a spur called the Hornrock that jutted out from the northern cliff. The Hornburg was surrounded by a wall, behind which was an outer court and a citadel containing an inner court and a tall tower. In the tower was the great horn of Helm Hammerhand. When the horn was sounded, it echoed throughout the ravine and caused fear and dismay among enemy forces.

Lothlorien

Lothlorien was the home of Galadriel and Celeborn and their people, the Galadhrim. It was the only forest of mallorn-trees in Middle-earth, and thus it was known as the Golden Wood. Lothlorien was a place where time seemed to stand still, a waking dream of the ancient days of the Elves that would soon fade forever from Middle-earth.
