| Main town in Rohan and site of the royal court. Edoras was located at the foot of the White Mountains, which formed the southern border of Rohan. The town stood on a green hill at the mouth of the valley of Harrowdale. There were many wooden houses on the slopes of the hill. At the summit on a green terrace was Meduseld, the great hall of the Kings of Rohan. There was a spring at the bottom of the terrace that issued from a stone horse's head. From it a stream flowed downhill and alongside a paved road and stone steps descended to the town gate. Edoras was surrounded by a great wall and thorny fence and a dike. The town was defended by the Muster of Edoras, comprised of Riders from the town itself and the surrounding King's Lands including Harrowdale, as well as nearby parts of the East-mark and West-mark. The Muster of Rohan was the ward of the First Marshal of the Mark. During Theoden's reign, the King himself acted in this capacity, and Elfhelm was the officer in command of the garrison of Edoras.

At the end of the mountain range stood the stronghold of Isengard near the southwestern corner of the forest. To the east and south of Fangorn was the land of Rohan. Lothlorien lay about 75 miles north of Fangorn. Fangorn Forest stretched approximately 100 miles from north to south and 100 miles from east to west, covering an area of about 10,000 square miles. Two rivers flowed from Fangorn Forest. In the northern part of the forest, the Limlight flowed from the woods and then formed the northern border of Rohan before emptying into the Anduin.

Helm's Deep was located near the Gap of Rohan at the foot of the three-peaked mountain called the Thrihyrne in the northwestern fork of the White Mountains. Between the arms of the Thrihyrne lay a valley called the Deeping-coomb. A trench and rampart called Helm's Dike stretched across the Deeping-coomb. Two furlongs - or a quarter mile - behind Helm's Dike was Helm's Gate, the entrance to Helm's Deep. Helm's Deep was a narrow ravine with high cliffs on the northern and southern sides that blocked out the sunlight. The Deeping-wall was built across the entrance to the ravine, and at the northern end of the wall was the fortress of the Hornburg. No enemy had ever captured the Hornburg while it was defended. The Hornburg stood on a spur called the Hornrock that jutted out from the northern cliff. The Hornburg was surrounded by a wall, behind which was an outer court and a citadel containing an inner court and a tall tower. In the tower was the great horn of Helm Hammerhand. When the horn was sounded, it echoed throughout the ravine and caused fear and dismay among enemy forces.

Lothlorien was a place where time seemed to stand still, a waking dream of the ancient days of the Elves that would soon fade forever from Middle-earth.

| Fiefdom of Gondor. Anfalas was located on the southern coast between the River Lefnui and the River Blackroot. Anfalas had a long shoreline on the Bay of Belfalas. The promontory of Andrast was west of Anfalas, the Pinnath Gelin - or Green Hills - were to the north, and the fiefdom of Belfalas was to the east. There were a number of small villages in Anfalas. Men of many sorts lived in Anfalas including herdsmen, hunters, and fishermen. At the time of the War of the Ring, the Lord of Anfalas was Golasgil. He led a long line of his men to the defense of Minas Tirith, and they arrived in the City on March 9, 3019 of the Third Age. Few of them were well-armed except for those of Lord Golasgil's household.

As the threat from Mordor increased, the City was renamed Minas Tirith - the Tower of Guard. During the War of the Ring, Sauron's forces besieged Minas Tirith and the Battle of the Pelennor Fields was fought outside its walls. After the downfall of Sauron, Aragorn was crowned before the gates of Minas Tirith and the banner of the Kings of Gondor flew over the City once more.

Minas Tirith was about 15 miles from Osgiliath on the western side of the Anduin. On the eastern side was the land of Ithilien between the river and the borders of Mordor. Osgiliath was a large and beautiful city. One of its main buildings was the Dome of Stars, where the chief palantir was kept. The Kings of Gondor ruled from the Great Hall of Osgiliath and they dwelled in the King's House. Between the two parts of the city was a great stone bridge with towers and houses upon it, and there were a number of lesser bridges as well. On the river banks were landings for the ships that carried people and trade goods up and down the Anduin from Wilderland in the north to the Bay of Belfalas in the south.

| Greatest mountain range in Middle-earth. Stretching over 800 miles from north to south, the Misty Mountains divided Eriador in the west from Wilderland in the east. The great Dwarf-realm of Khazad-dum was built beneath the Misty Mountains, but for much of the Third Age the mountains were infested with Orcs and other evil creatures.
At the northernmost peak of the Misty Mountains was Carn Dum, the stronghold of the Witch-king of Angmar from 1300 to 1975 of the Third Age. The mountains south of Carn Dum were known as the Mountains of Angmar. Gundabad was an important peak in the northern Misty Mountains. The Dwarves believed that Durin, the eldest of the Seven Fathers of the Dwarves, awoke beneath Mount Gundabad in ancient times. Mount Gram was also located in the northern Misty Mountains. The Lord of the Eagles dwelled on an eyrie called the Great Shelf on the eastern side of the northern Misty Mountains.

| Khazad-dum was the greatest of the Dwarf realms in Middle-earth. Its vast and beautiful halls lay under the Misty Mountains. From its mines came great riches and it was the only source of the precious metal called mithril. But a Balrog slept in the deeps beneath Khazad-dum, and when it awoke the Dwarves were driven from their home. The halls of Khazad-dum were taken over by Orcs and other evil creatures and it became known as Moria, the Black Chasm, and was a place of fear and dread.

| Volcanic mountain in Mordor where the One Ring was created and destroyed. Mount Doom stood alone on the plateau of Gorgoroth in northwestern Mordor about 90 miles from the Black Gate. The mountain was 30 miles directly west of Sauron's stronghold, the Dark Tower. Mount Doom was about 4,500 feet high. The base rose about 3,000 feet; its long grey slopes were rugged and broken and covered with ash and slag and burned stone. The central cone had sheer sides and was about half again as high - or 1,500 feet tall. There was a jagged crater at the top from which smoke, fumes and lava issued. Beneath the mountain was a subterranean core of intense heat and undying fire. A road led to Mount Doom from the Morgul Pass southwest of the mountain. Another road called Sauron's Road led from the Dark Tower to the east side of Mount Doom. It was a broad road paved with rubble and ash and it was repaired and maintained by Orcs.

| City of Umbar in Harad. The City of the Corsairs stood at the far end of the Havens of Umbar which opened onto the Sea south of the Bay of Belfalas. The city was home to a group of seafaring raiders known as the Corsairs. They were descended from the sons of Castamir and his followers who had rebelled against King Eldacar of Gondor during the Kin-strife. The rebels came to Umbar in 1448 of the Third Age. They mingled with the native inhabitants, who in turn were descendants of the Haradrim and the Black Numenoreans (Men of Numenor corrupted by Sauron). The Corsairs were enemies of the Men of Gondor and they frequently raided Gondor's coasts. In 1810, King Telumehtar of Gondor retaliated by capturing Umbar and destroying the Corsairs' stronghold. In the years that followed, Gondor was distracted by other concerns and the Corsairs were able to reclaim Umbar and rebuild their stronghold.
